Self-exclusion: how to shut the account and what comes after
Self-exclusion means asking the operator to close your account for a set period or permanently. Unlike a cooling-off break it usually cannot be undone before the end date — and that is the point. Before deciding, know what happens to your balance, bonuses and marketing.
How to request it
- Open the account settings and look for responsible gambling or account closure.
- Choose the length. If there is no option, write to support and request self-exclusion in writing.
- Save the confirmation: date, length and the operator's reply.
- At the same time unsubscribe from email and SMS marketing.
What happens to your balance
The terms usually state what happens to money in the account during exclusion. In most cases the remaining withdrawable balance can be paid out. Withdraw before excluding, or ask support in writing how the balance will be paid. Bonus money with unmet conditions may be cancelled.
Limits as an intermediate step
If full exclusion feels too big a step, start with a deposit limit and a loss limit. A short cooling-off period can also help. All of these are tools, not punishments.
If self-exclusion does not work
If marketing keeps arriving or you can still log in after excluding, that is a serious problem. Write to support, attach the exclusion confirmation and ask them to check. If that fails, file a formal complaint and, if needed, contact the regulator. The order is on Complaints.
Before you exclude: three practical steps
- Withdraw the withdrawable balance and save the payout confirmation.
- Note your account ID and the exclusion date — you will need them if something goes wrong.
- Think about accounts on other sites. Exclusion usually covers only this operator's accounts.
After the exclusion ends
Some operators do not reopen an account automatically: a separate request is needed, sometimes with a waiting period. That is a safeguard. If the end date is near and you feel you need more time, extend it.
Help beyond the casino
Self-exclusion closes one account, not the urge to play. Contact your national helpline and ask about wider options in your country; in Estonia that is 15410. See also Responsible gambling.
