How sports bets are settled and disputed: a guide for India

A sports bet is a stake on how an event, such as an IPL match, turns out, and the bookmaker decides the result later under its own rules. Disputes come up more often than in casino games: was there a Super Over, was the player in the starting XI, was the bet voided? This page explains the format and the settlement logic only, as staking money from India is prohibited under the Online Gaming Act 2025.

Any sports section and list of sports on a Valmo account appear in the account itself, and not every market described here is necessarily offered. This is a general explanation of how bets are settled and how disputes arise, not an invitation to stake money.

What odds and margin mean

Odds are a multiplier applied to the stake when a bet wins. At 2.00, a ₹10 stake comes back as ₹20 on a win. The margin is the bookmaker's built-in share: convert the odds on every outcome into implied probabilities, and their sum comes to more than 100%. A lower margin means a line that is less costly for the bettor.

In-play betting and cash out explained

In-play or live bets are made while the match is running, so the odds keep shifting, for example after a wicket. Confirmation may lag, and a price move during that gap can lead to rejection. Cash out closes a bet before the event ends, at a sum based on the current position and the margin.

How sports and leagues differ

Football tends to offer the broadest range, with many leagues, tournaments and markets for each match. Cricket, tennis and basketball each follow their own rules, and these shape how bets are settled.

Betting bonuses

A sports bonus can take the form of a free bet, boosted odds or bet insurance. A free bet generally pays out the winnings without returning the stake. Conditions often include wagering and a minimum odds level for bonus bets.

Why betting rules stand apart

Bookmakers generally keep a dedicated rulebook for sports, apart from the casino terms. It covers settlement by sport, grounds for voiding a bet, limits on winnings and the handling of plainly wrong odds. In any disagreement, this is the text the bookmaker relies on, so it is the first thing to read when a past settlement is in question.

What a bet slip tells you

The slip records the bet ID, the event, the market, the odds when confirmed, the stake and the possible return. Should a detail such as the odds change afterwards, the slip serves as proof. A screenshot is a sensible record, especially for bigger amounts.

When a settlement looks wrong

  1. Look up the clause in the bookmaker's rules that governs settlement in that sport.
  2. Save a screenshot of the slip showing the bet ID, event, market, odds and time.
  3. Write to support and quote the relevant clause.
  4. Not happy with the response? Move on to the complaint order.

Common questions

How does placing a bet work, and is it allowed from India?
Generally, a selection goes onto a slip with a stake and is then confirmed at the displayed odds. Staking money this way from India is prohibited under the Online Gaming Act 2025.
What does margin mean?
It is the share the bookmaker builds into its odds. Lower margin means more favourable odds.
What makes a live bet get rejected?
Usually the price moved while the bet was being confirmed, so the original odds no longer applied.
